MMTA is the state coordinator for Highway Watch®, the transportation sector’s safety and security program that utilizes the skills and experiences of America’s transportation workers to help protect the nation’s critical transportation infrastructure.
Founded in
1998 by the American Trucking Associations (ATA), Highway Watch®
originally began as a way for truck drivers to report unsafe road conditions,
poor driving behavior, traffic congestion, road debris, and other potentially
dangerous conditions.
After the events of September 11,
2001, ATA recognized
the trucking industry’s vulnerability, resources, and economic importance and
added an anti-terrorism security component to the training. Participants
are now specially trained to recognize potential safety and security threats to
avoid becoming a terrorist target and to spot a terrorist threat to
others.
The goal of the Highway Watch® program is to ensure that a truck is never again used as a weapon of mass destruction. Highway Watch® members are assigned a unique identification number and are instructed how to make a professional report to law enforcement through a national toll-free hotline. Recently, the Highway Watch® training program was revised to make participation easier than ever. Training is now delivered through a one-hour DVD, videotape, audiotape, or CD.
